The answer is simple, no and yes…huh?
Well, since according to Google more than 40% of searches are currently being done on mobile devices and every trend indicator supports that number going up, it is ABSOLUTELY necessary to have a website that is easily viewable on MOBILE DEVICES…period.
However, there is another option to websites specifically designed for MOBILE. It’s called RESPONSIVE design or Mobile Responsive design.
What is the difference?
Responsive designed sites are adaptive to the device they are being viewed on. They look good on desktop as well as mobile devices.
Dedicated Mobile websites are designed specifically for mobile devices; they look great on mobile devices, on desktops…eh, maybe not so much.
So what do I do?
You have essentially two choices:
1. Develop two separate websites, one for desktop (traditional) & one for mobile.
2. One Mobile Responsive website. (also, btw, better for SEO according to Google anyway)
As of this post date, my recommendation would be as follow.
If you are building a new website, I would definitely go with RESPONSIVE, however, if you love your current website and or have spent a bundle on building it in the last couple of years; you can opt to keep it as is and have a mobile variation of that site built.
Next installment I will back up my OPINION with data in order to help you make a more informed decision.
